How to plan a hike?

A hike can be a great adventure but it is not the sort of thing that you just show up and do. For example if you go on a cycling trip, you should well plan ahead. Hiking trips aren't different , it requires a fair amount of planning. A well planned hike will be much safer and much more enjoyable so make sure that you take the time to plan your hike properly. Of course this requires that you know just how to plan a hike.

The first thing that you are going to have to do in order to plan a hike is to determine just how long you want to spend hiking. There is a huge difference in the planning requirements for a day hike and those for a two trek. Once you have decided on how long you are planning to spend on your hike you are also going to have to determine realistically just how far you can go in a day and what kind of terrain you can handle. From this you will be able to decide on your route.

Once you know how long you expect to hike for and how far you can go in a day you will want to decide on the route that you are going to take. Make sure that you are choosing a route that you can handle and err on the side of caution, it is far better to find out that a route was too easy than too difficult. Once you know what route you are planning to take find out as much as you can about the route. Read whatever you can on the route and try to talk to other hikers who have used it before.

The next step is going to be to determine what to bring with you. In large part this will depend on how long you expect to be gone for. Clearly you need a lot more equipment for a multiday hike than you do for a single day hike. Determining what you need to bring with you can be a challenge, on the one hand you don't want to forget something that you need. On the other hand you don't want to carry more than you have to. You will need to decide what you really need and what you can do without.

The last thing that you have to do when you are planning a hike is to make sure that somebody knows where you are going and how long you expect to be gone. Ideally you should leave a route map and itinerary with somebody and also leave instructions about how long after you are overdue they should wait before they report you as missing. People get lost and injured on hikes all the time so you have to make sure that there is a plan in place to come find you if this happens during your hike.
